Lesson 5 – Off Loading Sulphuric Acid Tanker

1.  OFF LOADING SULPHURIC ACID

1.1.        Personal Safety Equipment

1.1.1.    Long rubber gloves

1.1.2.    Acid suit or oil skins

1.1.3.    Acid mask with two canisters

1.1.4.    Face shield

1.1.5.    Safety hat

1.1.6.    Make sure emergency shower work.

 

 

2.  OFF LOADING

2.1.        Sulphuric acid tanker to be directed to off loading point by security.

2.2.        Driver to report to CIP control room with his delivery note.

2.3.        Supervisor to ensure that tanker has been to weigh bridge.

2.4.        Supervisor to accompany driver to tanker.

2.5.        It is the responsibility of the recipient’s off loading supervisor to clearly instruct the tanker driver which tank to be filled.

2.6.        The recipient’s off loading official has the right to refuse permission to discharge the contents of a road tanker if he is not satisfied with the condition of the tanker, the reasons for the rejection should be noted on the delivery note.

2.7.        The authorizing for off loading is the responsibility of the supervisor in charge, and should be thoroughly trained in the correct safety procedures.

2.8.        Cordon off area with ‘DO NOT ENTER’ signs, chains/ barricade tape.

2.9.        Measure tank and make sure there is enough space for delivery.

2.10.     Make sure driver use his safety equipment as per EGM Safety Codes.

2.11.     Unlock delivery pipe

2.12.     Adhere at all times to the safety rules of EGM.

2.13.     Driver connect the off loading pipe.

2.14.     Open the water hose to provide running water. Mine air to be used.

2.15.     Phone smelthouse and let them know that you are going to start off loading sulphuric acid.

2.16.     Open mine air and pressurize tanker {slowly}.

2.17.     Open delivery valve on tanker.

2.18.     Make sure there are no leaks at all and stand away while off loading is taking place.

 

3.  TANKER EMPTY

3.1.        Driver close mine air and close delivery valve on tanker.

3.2.        Driver de-pressurize tanker and disconnect delivery pipe.

3.3.        Helper lock delivery pipe and wash any spilled acid away.

3.4.        Measure level on tank and sign delivery note {keep a copy}

3.5.        Tanker leaving plant to stores {weigh bridge}.

3.6.        Phone smelthouse and let them know that the off loading is complete.

Contractor/ Supplier Driver offloading by themselves. Plant Personnel to make sure offloading is into correct storage tank and done as per Plant safety procedures
