Lesson 2 – Off Loading Hydrochloric Acid Tanker

1.   HYDROCHLORIC ACID OFF LOADING BY COMPETENT PERSONS

1.1.        HCL Tanker to be directed to off loading point by plant security.

1.2.        Driver to report to CIP control room with his delivery note.

1.3.        Supervisor to ensure that tanker has been to weigh bridge.

1.4.        Supervisor or team leader to accompany driver to tanker

1.5.        Competent person to be in attendance throughout off loading.

1.6.        Cordon area off with ‘DO NOT ENTER’ signs, chains/ barricade tape.

1.7.        Measure the HCL tanks to make sure that there is room for the delivery.

1.8.        Both competent person and driver to wear recommended personal protective equipment as stated.

1.9.        It is the responsibility of the recipient’s off loading supervisor to clearly instruct the tanker driver which tank to be filled.

1.10.     The off loading supervisor is responsible for authorizing discharge at the off loading area and should be thoroughly trained and found competent in the correct procedures to be followed and the emergency measures to be taken in case of a spillage.

1.11.     Unlock delivery point.

1.12.     Driver to connect to delivery point and connect earth cable.

1.13.     Check safety shower is working.

1.14.     Open running water hose

1.15.     Ensure loading valves on tank area open.

1.16.     Driver connect air hose to tanker after de-watering.

1.17.     The recipient’s off loading supervisor has the right to refuse permission to discharge the contents of a road tanker if he is not satisfied with the condition of the tanker, the reason for the rejection should be noted on the delivery note.

1.19.     Driver and competent person to stand at air valve when driver opens slowly. Make sure there are no leaks at all and stand away while off loading is taking place.

1.20.     Competent person to ensure all safety procedures are adhered to as stated.

 

 

2.  TANKER EMPTY

2.1.        Close air

2.2.        Driver to ensure tanker is de-pressured before disconnecting delivery pipe.

2.3.        Competent person to lock delivery point. Wash away and spillage and close delivery valves on HCL tanks.

2.4.        Competent person to measure HCL tank level and sign delivery note.

2.5.        Competent person attach delivery check list to plant copy of delivery note.

2.6.        Remove ‘DO NOT ENTER’ signs, chains/ barricade tape.

2.7.        Tanker to leave plant to weigh bridge at mine store.

 

 

3.  PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

3.1.        Hazchem suit, acid proof overall or oil skins.

3.2.        Neoprene or rubber gloves

3.3.        Gumboots

3.4.        Full face shield or full face mask with gas cannister.

3.5.        Hard hat

3.6.        Neoprene or acid resistant apron
