Hazardous Materials
REQUIREMENTS FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS MANAGEMENT
- The design of facilities / processes for transporting, producing, storing, using or disposing of hazardous materials shall be reviewed, and documented, by means of a process risk assessment tool.
- System to be in place to update & control designs / drawings of buildings / installations related to Hazardous Materials.
- Safe storage, venting, drainage and containment of Hazardous materials to be provided for according to a risk assessment.
- All storage vessels, containers and tanks to be labelled clearly to identify the stored material.
- All Valves of all Piping containing hazardous substances to be marked as per SANS 10140-3:2003 Edition 3.
- The contents and direction of flow of the piping must be clearly identifiable.
- Access control to be in place at areas where hazardous materials are stored, used & released under operational circumstance.
- Explosives and initiating systems must be:
– Handled and initiated by appointed persons and protected against accidental initiation causes
– Stored securely in facilities compliant with legislation and appropriately segregated
– Routinely inspected, inventoried, rotated and stock movements recorded
- There must be a system to prevent drilling into loaded holes or explosives remnants.
- There must be a blast clearance and re-entry procedure for areas that could be affected by the blast.
