Lesson 7 – Portable Oxygen Sets

Types of portable oxygen sets:

ECOMED Oxygen Cylinders:

Colour coding of different types of medical gas cylinders:

Important components of oxygen cylinders:

  • Pressure gauge – The gauge will indicate whether the cylinder is pressurised or empty
  • Regulator – For the control of oxygen flow
  • The regulators on both types of oxygen cylinders have 2 settings.
  • Always set it to maximum flow.
  • Mask and oxygen supply line (With or without non-return valve)
  • The oxygen valve must be in the ‘ON’ position in order to supply oxygen.

RE-USE INSPECTION:

Regular Oxygen pre-use inspection checks:

  • Ensure the container and components are clean and hygienic.
  • De-coil oxygen supply pipe. Ensure it is not perished or badly kinked.
  • Ensure the mask is without cracks.
  • Ensure the mask elastic band is not perished.
  • The oxygen supply pipe and mask must be attached to regulator.
  • If applicable, the non-return valve must be operational and fitted to the mask.
  • Check pressure gauge for sufficient pressure.
(On ECOMED unit – Open cylinder valve first)
  • Ensure pressure regulator is set to maximum setting.
