Lesson 6 – Rescue Affected Person

Important Considerations:

  • Cyanide enters your bloodstream via:

-Skin absorption

-Inhalation

-Ingestion

  • Cyanide molecule binds with oxygen molecule and causes internal suffocation.
  • If a person has been exposed to cyanide, medical oxygen should be administered immediately.
  • Patients need SPEEDY assistance, do not hesitate. You only have minutes to save the affected person.
  • Do not become a victim – protect self before you attempt the rescue!

How do I protect myself?

  • Different types of emergency suits (Hazchem suits and PPE) that can be donned in order to deal with a Cyanide spill or to rescue an affected person.

Generic Recommended Steps:

  • Activate alarm
  • Put on self protection and go to patient(s).
  • Get a Buddy to assist.
  • Move patient to safe area.
  • Get medical support and assistance
  • Obtain antidote and portable oxygen set (The antidote must accompany the patient to the hospital)
  • Administer oxygen.
  • Remove contaminated clothes.
  • Shower patient thoroughly for 15-20 minutes.
  • Put patient at rest and cover with blanket.
  • Monitor patient breathing and heartbeat and give CPR if required.
  • Await medical personnel for advanced life support.
