Lesson 5 – Emergency Procedures – Surface Fires

GENERAL

All employees are to make themselves familiar with escape routes.

In an emergency, when all persons have been withdrawn to a place of safety, phone the local mine security. General Manager’s Office personnel to phone municipal fire brigade.

 

FIRE AND EMERGENCY:

  • Withdraw all workmen to a safe place. (Assembly point).
  • If the fire is small, attempt to extinguish it.
  • If the fire is extensive, phone mine security and fire brigade.
  • Advise the manager by phone.
  • If you notice smoke, investigate the cause.
  • No official to leave the mine without permission of the Manager.

 

The Manager Engineering shall:

  • Appoint a Fire Master.
  • Formulate procedures.

 

The Fire Master shall:

  • Appoint an Assistant Fire Master and fire-fighting teams.
  • Ensure that all employees are familiar with procedures.
  • Ensure availability of fire fighting equipment.
  • Provide records of fire fighting equipment.
  • Provide security with names and telephone numbers of members of fire-fighting teams.
  • Submit a monthly, written report to the General Manager on potential fire hazards and the condition of equipment.
  • Indicate fire risk areas on plan.

 

Equipment Controllers

  • Examine and submit a monthly report on condition and availability of fire fighting equipment to the Fire Master.
  • Ensure that all fire fighting equipment is in order and ready for use. (Truck available and water trailer filled with water, etc.)
  • Submit a written report to the Fire Master regarding condition and availability of equipment on a monthly basis.

 

Head of Department:

  • Ensure that all persons are familiar with procedures.
  • Check weekly on fire fighting equipment and enter details of such inspection in a book kept for this purpose.

 

LIST OF FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT WHICH MUST BE AVAILABLE:

  • Weekly Inspection Register.
  • Vehicle with hitch for water trailer.
  • Fire water trailer (car), or mobile extinguisher.
  • Hoses with garden fittings – fire hoses.
  • Fire extinguishers.
  • Fire fighting suites – full face masks and canister.
  • First aid equipment.
  • Fire beaters.
  • Portable hydrants – adapter.
  • Poderaux spray nozzle with branch pipe.
  • 19mm jet nozzle with branch pipe.
  • Dividing breaching – collecting breech.
  • 63mm fire hose (4 x 15m; 2 x 7,5m)
  • Hacksaw.
  • X-cut saw.
  • Pipe wrenches (46cm and 61cm)
  • Chain tongs.
  • Hammers (1kg, 2 kg, 4 kg).
  • Axe.
  • Pinch bars (1m, 1,5m, 2m).
  • Various sizes of flanges, clamps, set spanners aluminium pipes and fittings to suit the standards of the mine.
