Lesson 5 – Emergency Equipment

The following emergency equipment shall be readily available when cyanide related tasks are performed:

  • 2 Oxygen packs (cylinders sufficiently full)
  • 2 first aid kits (standard mine issue)
  • 2 additional sets of PPE for emergency personnel
  • Radio / Mobile phone for communication with the security control room if needed
  • Relevant emergency contact numbers (prominently displayed)
  • Cyanide antidote kit (not expired).

 

PPE for emergency personnel will consist of:

  • A set of gumboots
  • A full rain suit with hood
  • A full face mask
  • A pair long sleeve rubber gloves
  • Emergency equipment and PPE shall be kept in a safe place, close to the cyanide storage and dosing facilities when not required – and not to be used for other purposes.
  • A person shall be appointed for monthly examination of the equipment and defects are to be logged in a logbook provided for this purpose. All defects noted are to be rectified immediately.
  • Each site shall have a cyanide safety emergency room where the above mentioned PPE is available

 

Tanker requirements

  • The vehicle will be in a roadworthy condition.
  • Upon arrival at the mine, the tanker’s valves will have been sealed by the supplier with a numbered seal and this seal must still be intact to indicate that no tampering has occurred while in transit.
  • The cyanide delivery hose will be a 100mm NB composite hose (poly prop fabric reinforced, wire wrapped) fitted with a 215mm OD Table ‘D’ flange. Bolt holes are M16 x 4 on a 178mm PCD.
  • The tanker will be fitted with a pressure gauge.
  • All of the tanker’s discharge points will be sealed with a blank flange. The tanker will contain the following hand tools:
  • 1″ Jubilee clamp and fastening tool
  • 2 off 100mm clinkerite gaskets
  • Spanners to fasten a M16 bolt

 

Emergency Equipment

  • Radio/ Mobile phone communication with the security control room
  • Relevant emergency contact numbers (prominently displayed)
  • Cyanide antidote kit (not expired).

  • A full face mask with a cyanide canister that has not expired.
  • A pair long sleeve rubber gloves
