Lesson 5 – Potential Hazards

Historic abandoned mining areas may pose a risk to recce teams visiting them and are potentially unsafe where the primary hazard is loss of life.

The required risk assessment must address the following;

  • Heat.
  • Gasses.
  • Low or no oxygen.
  • Poor ground conditions.
  • Fall of grounds.
  • Pillar fracturing under load.
  • Support decay.
  • Water accumulation.
  • Artisanal or illegal miners.
  • Abandoned explosives and
  • Open holes
