COMPETENT PERSON
Means a person who-
- Is qualified by virtue of his knowledge, training, skills, and experience to organize the work and its performance; and
- Is familiar with the legal requirements which apply to the work to be performed; and
- Has been trained to recognize any potential or actual danger to health and safety in the performance of the work; or
- Is in possession of an appropriate certificate of competency where such certificate is legally required
ABANDONED AREA
- A working place/end where no work will take place in the foreseeable future and declared abandoned by the Manager Mining. This would further entail that any work place that has been closed off by means of a permanent seal will fall under this category. Thus any work place that is deprived of ventilation flow is deemed abandoned.
OLD WORKING AREAS
- These areas are not completely abandoned and are used to ventilate the mine. In some areas mining activities (mostly vamping) are also done and these areas will be considered as current working places.
- Old areas are visited frequently for the purpose to do:
–Airway inspections.
–Deterring Illegal miner activities.
–And to investigate possible old gold vamping activities.
–Reclaiming purposes
RECONNAISSANCE
- Means preliminary survey (investigation) of an area to collect useful data. Mine personal usually recce an area when they are potentially going to return at a later stage.
- The reconnaissance should be done in conjunction with the SOP122 – Removal / Extraction of Designed Pillars and Classified Pillars.
