Lesson 3 – Removing, Repairing, and Fitting Wheels – Surface

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Any person, who takes possession of a motor vehicle for any reason whatsoever, immediately becomes liable in respect of any offences committed and penalties/fines/prosecution which may result.
  • A standard relevant vehicle pre-use check – list must be used on all surface transport.
  • The driver must complete a relevant pre-use checklist before commencement of using the vehicle/equipment in question, a pre-use checklist must be completed at least once in each shift, in the case of multiple drivers utilizing such vehicle, provisions should be made for other drivers to counter sign the same pre-use checklist, if any defects or sub standard conditions are noted, the initial daily pre-use checklist must be altered followed by the appropriate action. All trips must be recorded  on the vehicle log book.
  • The operator or driver of any vehicle, truck or earth moving equipment will report any sub-standard condition, which he encounters on his vehicle or in the operating area, which could cause injury to persons or damage to property, to his supervisor immediately.
  • No Vehicle, truck or earth moving equipment may be used until such sub-standard condition is fixed.
  • Only persons who have a recognised valid South African driver’s licence who has completed the prescribed tests at the training centre and has been appointed by the responsible engineer in terms of regulation 2.13.1, may drive company vehicles.
  • Only persons who have passed the Driver Medical examination will be allowed to drive any company vehicle. This examination must be repeated annually.
  • Any person who has been appointed to drive company vehicles and has had his South African drivers licence suspended or revoked shall by default not be allowed to drive any company vehicle. It shall be the responsibility of such person to inform the company or his/her HOD of his /her driver’s licence suspension.
  • All mine vehicles including all trucks & earth-moving equipment is to be equipped with approved fire extinguishers.
  • No horseplay or interference with the driver will be tolerated
  • All drivers of any vehicle who travel on an urban road must obey all traffic rules and regulations.
  • All drivers must have their driver’s licenses on his person and produce when asked to do so (Act 29/1991).

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Perform a mini risk assessment and discuss the hazards involved related to:

–SAFETY of persons and equipment (Safety in Equipment & Procedures)

–HEALTH of persons and (Personnel PPE & Capability To Perform The Job)

–ENVIRONMENTAL aspects. (Control & Awareness of All Hazardous Substances)

  • Vehicle must not be used when a flat tyre is detected. Contact CRD foreman to send a competent person to change the tyre.
  • Make sure a vehicle is on level ground where possible.
  • Stop block must be in place.
  • Make sure the park brake is activated.
  • Ensure correct capacity jack and install correct type and capacity stands under axles.
  • Only tyres up to trucks will be repaired on site. Bigger than trucks are send to supplier to be fixed.
  • When inflating all size tyres, the employee must make sure the lock ring is in place and all tyres are put in a cage before inflating.
  • Truck tyres are inflated to 2 bar and the lock ring are inspected to make sure it is in place before inflating the tyre to the correct pressure.
  • If the wheel has to be changed outside a workshop, ensure that the SME is highly visible to other SMEs by switching on the emergency flashing lights and the emergency tri-angle must be displayed on the road surface to warm other road users of the danger of a stationery vehicle.
  • Position the lifting device underneath the SME as close to the wheel as possible.
  • Lift the SME until the wheel just clears the ground.
  • Position wooden blocks underneath and lower the SME to firmly rest on the wooden blocks.
  • Visually inspect the wooden blocks to ensure that it is safe to proceed.
  • Important: Where SME axles have oscillation movement on the axle housing, only one wheel may be changed at any time. Removing both wheels at the same time can cause uncontrolled movement due to unbalanced conditions which could result in a serious safety hazard.
  • Remove all wheel nuts and washers and keep it on hand for later use.(container)
  • Remove the old wheel to a safe position and firmly secure it to the ground. Never handle a SME wheel alone if there is a possibility that you might compromise health and safety due to working alone.
  • Safely move and position the new wheel in front of the hub.
  • Making use of the two pinch bars, the wheel can now be lifted onto the wheel hub and located onto the wheel studs.
  • While one employee keeps the new wheel in position, the other person must immediately stabilize the new wheel in position by fitting the four (4) most important wheel nuts & washers first. One at 12 and 6 O’ Clock and the other two at 9 and 3 O’ Clock respectively.(90 degrees apart)
  • Pre-tighten these four wheel nuts. Ensure that all wheel studs have been centralized after pre­ tightening.
  • If everything is in order, the rest of the nuts can now be fitted. If a crossbar or T-Bar wheel spanner is used, it shall not be extended with a pipe or any other means to tighten wheel nuts. A torque wrench or pre-set impact tool shall be used. Torque all the nuts.
  • The SME can now be lifted and the wooden blocks removed.
  • Lower the SME to ground level and remove all lifting devices and accessories.
  • Store all tools and equipment.
  • Test the TMM and make entries onto the Daily Checklist regarding the following;

–The Wheel, Wheel Studs & Wheel Nuts are all in order.

–Make an entry clearly stating which wheel(s) and at which location, Front or Rear and Left or Right the wheel(s) was changed
