Lesson 4 – Maintenance

Persons permitted to use torches must  submit their equipment  (torches, hoses and regulators) on surface to the Boilermaker employed at the relevant section, plant or yard, once in each calendar month for examination and if necessary, repair.  The results of such examinations are to be recorded in a register /log book.

Boilermakers are excluded from the above but they are responsible for ensuring that equipment in their charge conforms to the following standards at all times.

The Boilermakers who have done these examinations will ensure that all equipment submitted is in good working order before it is returned to the user. If necessary he must replace defective equipment.

 

The following equipment must be in a carry-case and be in good condition when returned:- Cutting torch and nozzle complete:

  • Flash back arrestors situated on both the oxygen and acetylene lines between (a) the hose and torch connection and (b) the hose and regulator connection.
  • Acetylene hose with two left hand thread fittings and two jubilee clamps.
  • Oxygen hose with two right hand thread fittings and two jubilee clamps.
  • Acetylene regulator (fixed pressure).
  • Oxygen regulator (fixed pressure).

 

The following equipment must be in the possession of the appointed person at all times whilst using “OxyAcetylene equipment:

  • Nozzle cleaners (in good condition). Standard torch lighter (in good condition). Standard combination spanner “27mm”.
  • Two spare hose menders and four jubilee clamps.
