Lesson 3 – Terms and Definitions

Chairlift:   means any appliance or combination of appliances used or intend to be used for the conveyance of persons or material by means of chairs or other means of conveyance suspended from an endless hauling rope or with chairs or conveyances running on a rope or in or on a rail circuit and provided with a hauling rope or chain.

Competent person: means a person who-

  • is qualified by virtue of his knowledge, training, skills and experience to organize work and its performance;
  • is familiar with the provisions of the Act and regulations which apply to the work to be performed; and
  • has been trained or recognised any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the performance of the work; or
  • Is in possession of the appropriate certificate of competency where such certificate is required by these regulations

Attachments: Will mean any approved device, which is used to connect the chairlift rope to the chairlift or chairlift-posts.

Lock-out Device: Will mean a device by which power supply can be isolated by means of a lock and key.

Emergency  Trip Wire: Will mean an approved device installed throughout the entire length of the chairlift that will be used to stop the chairlift in the event of an emergency.
