ROAD SAFETY – Lesson 17

  • All persons driving on Barberton Mine Premises need to be in possession of a valid drivers license.
  • Persons need to at all times wear their safety belts
  • No person is allowed to use a cell phone whilst driving on the premises
  • Persons must adhere to all Traffic Management Plan, rules and signs
  • All vehicles entering the premises need to be roadworthy
  • Do not try to get on or off from a moving vehicle – you may fall and the vehicle can then run over you!
  • Demarcated Stops are the only places where you may get on/off a vehicle.
  • Do not get on/off at stop streets or speed bumps
  • Do not get on an overloaded bus there will be another. Wait for it.
  • Do not expect the bus to wait for you – be on time!
  • Do not force the doors of the Bus to open to get in or out.
  • All buses and vehicles to be equipped with portable fire extinguishers and first aid equipment.
  • Buses run according to a schedule – the driver is not allowed to drive off before time. Disciplinary action will be taken against people who assaults the driver, he only DRIVES the bus.
  • Wait for the vehicle to STOP completely before moving towards it  or before trying to get off.
  • When exiting the vehicle, wait for the vehicle to leave or walk away from the vehicle, do not move in front or behind the vehicle.
  • First – Look out for oncoming Traffic from both directions.
  • Disobeying rules can result in injury or death.
  • Inside the bus – you are not allowed to lean against the windows, break them, sit on the bonnet, smoke or litter.

OWN TRANSPORT

  • Where Employees are making use of own transport, the following road safety rules must be adhered to.
  • These rules are there to ensure your safety whilst travelling to and from work.

SPEED

  • Do not exceed the speed limits on Mine and Public Roads

SAFETY BELT

  • Always wear your Safety Belt.

CELLULAR PHONE

  • Do not talk on your cell phone whilst driving a vehicle

PASSENGERS

  • NO Passengers are allowed on the back of an open vehicle.

ROAD TRAFFIC CONTROLS

  • Stop at STOPstreets. They are there to regulate traffic and give all road users an equal opportunity
  • Do NOT overtake on Solid White Lines
  • Keep  following  distances

LIFE SAVING BEHAVIOURS

  • Please note that should you be found guilty of any road traffic act violation, serious consequences will result.
  • Failure to adhere to the above, Barberton Mines has the full authority of giving you a warning, your Supervisor will be informed and the necessary disciplinary action will be followed.

VEHICLES WILL NOT BE OPERATED UNLESS:

  • Serviced and checked (checklist)
  • In safe working condition
  • Drivers are certified, authorised and fit to drive
  • Passengers do not exceed the design specification for a given vehicle
  • Seat belts are installed and worn by occupants

Vehicles not to be operated unless:

  • The driver does not use hand held cell phones while driving
  • Persons and unsecured material and equipment are not being transported together in the same compartment

PEDESTRIAN GOLDEN RULES

  • Prescribed clothing and hard hat with reflective strips must be worn at all times
  • All underground vehicles have right of way
  • Stay on the up-dip side of all underground vehicles
  • It is your responsibility to make sure that the driver is aware of your presence
  • Get acknowledgement from the driver (sound the hooter twice)
  • Always take refuge in a safe place when interacting with mobile equipment
