Historic abandoned mining areas may pose a risk to recce teams visiting them and are potentially unsafe where the primary hazard is loss of life.
The required risk assessment must address the following;
- Heat.
- Gasses.
- Low or no oxygen.
- Poor ground conditions.
- Fall of grounds.
- Pillar fracturing under load.
- Support decay.
- Water accumulation.
- Artisanal or illegal miners.
- Abandoned explosives and
- Open holes
