- Open acetylene supply valve on the torch, wait ± 10 seconds for free flow, then light, by means of a spark lighter.
- Reduce or increase the acetylene supply on the torch until the flame just ceases to smoke.
- Open oxygen supply valve on the torch until the white inner cones in the flame are sharply defined with slightly rounded tips.
- The flame thus obtained is what is known as a neutral flame, and the torch is now ready for use.
- To close down the torch close acetylene supply valve first and then the oxygen supply valve on the torch.
- After the torch has been used and the acetylene and oxygen cylinders have been closed the accumulated acetylene and oxygen must be removed from the hoses by pressing the cutting oxygen lever on the torch until the hoses are empty before disconnecting the hoses.
- On completion of the task, thoroughly examine the area for hot fragments and douse with water.
- The timber in the area must again be watered down.
