Lesson 6 – Approved Standard Equipment

The equipment will be the standard as issued by the store.

  • Pre-selected fixed pressure regulators, which may not be tampered with and may only be used on the gas cylinder for which it was selected.
  • Rubber hoses with a minimum length of 9 metres and a maximum length of 15 metres, and of equal length that must not be taped together. Standard clips may only secure hoses or cable ties not larger than T 30 R, which will allow for rapid separation of hoses in an emergency.
  • Only brass menders used with jubilee clamps will be issued to repair hoses. Copper tubing, wires and other ways of improvising are not allowed and can be dangerous.
  • All hoses must be fitted with flash back arrestors between (a) torch and hose and (b) the hose and regulator.
  • Correct nozzle cleaners must be used. Wires, pins or other materials must not be used.
  • All equipment must be kept in standard containers when not in use or when being transported. Bull noses must be covered with the protective caps when in transit to protect the bull nose from scratches which will lead to leaking bottle I attachment.

 

A standard torch lighter must be used.

  • To connect fittings use only a standard approved combination spanner. “27mm”
  • Always use approved goggles with approved coloured lenses and clear lenses can only be used in shafts.
  • Where practicable always use leather gloves or gauntlets.
  • An operator should not wear clothes of flammable materials such as nylon overalls or sweaters.
  • An operator’s clothes should not be tucked into his I her safety shoes I boots allowing for hot sparks or off cuts to penetrate the foot area.
  • The correct approved safety shoes I boots are to be used at all times whilst using oxy acetylene equipment. Such shoes or boots needs to provide protection against hot sparks or off cuts getting into the boot resulting in an injury. If adequate protection is not provided, then leather spats will need to be used.
