Lesson 5 – Safety In The Use Of Oxy-acetylene Equipment

  • The use of oxy-acetylene equipment in itself is not dangerous provided that a trained operator uses it.
  • Remember  that  oxygen,  although  not  in  itself  combustible,  supports  and  accelerates combustion.
  • Clothes  and other  materials not considered  flammable  will burn  fiercely in the presence of oxygen.
  • Fuel gases are highly flammable and will ignite instantly from a spark or even from a piece of hot metal. Care in the operating and handling of equipment is essential and the Code of Practice should be strictly adhered to at all times.
  • See that all joints between cylinders and torch, especially those at the cylinder valve, which are under high pressure, are gas-tight.
  • Do not test for leakage with a flame. Use soap water.
  • Forbid smoking or naked flames when working on hose fittings. Leaking cylinders must not be used
