OVERHAUL DRUM BRAKES BRAKE ASSEMBLY
SPECIAL TOOLS USED AND INSPECTION THEREOF
- Always use the correct tools
- Ensure tools are in a good condition
- Use tools correctly
POSITIONING OF VEHICLE
- Ensure vehicle stands level
- Ensure correct capacity jack is used
- Install correct type and capacity stands under axles
LOCK-OUT & GENERAL SAFETY
- Make sure the vehicle is switched off and locked out where applicable.
HOW TO STRIP
- Remove the wheel
- Release the handbrake and disconnect handbrake cable
- Back all adjustments of the handbrake cable
- Undo the two brake drums retaining screws and carefully pull the brake drum off
- Remove the two shoe pull-off springs
- Remove the shoe retaining spring
- Remove the brake shoes, remove the dust covers, remove the breed screw
- Examine all parts for wear
- Examine the brake drums
REPAIRS/ CHANGES
- All parts that need to be replaced should be replaced.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE
- Smear a thin film of brake fluid in all parts
- Replace the spring, piston, piston seals and dust covers
- Replace the bleed screws
- Replace the brake shoes
- Replace the two pull off springs
- Replace the shoe retaining springs
- Replace the drum
- Replace the wheel
TESTING AND COMMISSIONING
- Ensure no loose object lying around
- All members of the team must be alerted
REMOVE THE INJECTOR PUMP
SPECIAL TOOLS USED AND INSPECTION THEREOF
- All personnel to wear the correct PPE
- All staff changing cylinders should be familiar with the handtools used and the jacking up of a vehicle
POSITIONING OF VEHICLE
- Stop and isolate engine
LOCK-OUT & GENERAL SAFETY
- Make sure vehicle is switched off and locked out where applicable
- Stop and isolate engine.
HOW TO STRIP
- Clean the outside of the pump and surrounding area
- Ensure that No piston is on the compression stroke
- Turn the engine so that the INJ mark on the flywheel lines up
- Remove all the pipes between the injector pump and all injectors
- Remove the fuel pipes between the filter and the injector pump
- Disconnect the accelerator and stop levers
- Remove the pump securing nuts and washers
- Remove the pump
REPAIRS/ CHANGES
- Place a feeler gauge of the correct dimension
- Screw in the clearance adjuster until a slight drag is felt on the feeler gauge
- Tighten the lock nut
- Follow the same procedure to adjust the tappets on the remaining cylinders.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE
- Sent it for repairs

FINAL DOCUMENTS TO COMPLETE
- Book new spares used
- Book regained oil and new oil where applicable
