Lesson 3 – Safety Competitions

Rules applicable to safety competitions:

  • Vouchers will only be given for team achievements and not individual performance.
  • All injury Rates are published on a monthly basis in the Safety Report.
  • It is the responsibility of the Time Office to ensure that the correct information regarding shift allocation is forwarded to the safety department for the calculation of Safety Statistics.
  • Shifts worked by outside contractors are to be included in the section where such contractors are working except where contractors operate completely independently, e.g. Vamping Contractors.
  • The allocation of vouchers will be made at the discretion of the General Manager/Manager Mining/Metallurgical Manager.
  • For the purpose of this competition, Miners’ sections will qualify separately.
  • Underground Shift bosses will only qualify once his/her entire section qualifies.
  • Underground employees who are involved in shift rotation shall qualify for 50% should each of the shift he worked for, qualify for a safety voucher i.e. if night or day shift qualifies, that employee qualifies for only 50% of the qualifying period. NB: Mines must keep records of shift rotation to avoid confusion.
  • Changes in the supervisory capacity of any qualifying section must be communicated to the Safety Department to prevent confusion when claiming.
  • Vouchers will only be awarded to persons qualifying.

 

Qualifying dates:

  • The safety-reporting month is as per the calendar month. Any penalizing incident that occurs in a safety reporting month will result in the accumulated qualifying period to start at Nil on the 01s t of the following month.
  • E.g. a section has a 9 months accumulated qualifying period at 30 June 2008. They incur a penalizing incident on 20 June 2008. This disqualifying the month 01 June 2008 to 30 June 2008, resulting in their new accumulated qualifying period commences 01 July 2008.
  • The General Manager/ Manager Mining/Metallurgical Manager may recommend special awards to any employee who has performed above average in the field of safety and who has not qualified for an award in any of the award schemes.
  • For purposes of the Manager’s Shield and Chairman’s Cup competitions the annual awards will operate on the cost months of January to December of each year.
  • The lost time injury free period will revert back to zero when a lost time injury occurs.
  • Supervisors must complete Safety Award Vouchers – Claim Forms and the Accounts Department must receive all claim forms on/before the 15th of the following month:

–Claim forms are to be summarised.

–Suppliers’ cheques to be processed.

–Cash vouchers to be requested from suppliers.

–Cash vouchers to be collected and distributed before payday to Mine Clerks.

–Vouchers to be made available on pay day only.

–Vouchers not claimed due to discharges, etc., must be returned with references to Accounts Department, as soon as possible after payday. Receipt to be confirmed.

–Claims that are late by 60 days (calculated as from the next day of the qualifying date) shall not be accepted.

–Claim forms received after the 15th will only be processed the following month.

  • The General Manager/ Manager Mining/Metallurgical Manager may cancel or amend competitions at any time.

 

Underground safety competition – mining participants

  • All employees who are employed underground at any one of the three mines.
  • Employees who are employed in mining surface sections will be included in the respective Shift Supervisor’s section.
  • The Section where a Contractor employee is injured will be penalised. A HOD will only qualify when his/her entire section qualifies.

 

Qualification criteria

  • Continuous 6-month period not having a lost time injury.
  • In order to qualify for the award employees must have completed a minimum of 50% of the shifts during the qualifying period.

 

Technical services – underground

  • Technical Services Underground Employees such as Safety, Geology, Survey, Sampling and Ventilation will be included in the Technical Services Underground Safety Voucher scheme.
  • Continuous 12-month period not having a lost time injury.
  • In order to qualify for the award, employees must have completed a minimum of 50% of the shifts during the qualifying period.

 

Engineering – safety competition participants

  • All engineering employees, who are employed at any one of the three mines, are eligible. The Metallurgical Plant engineering employees will participate in the Metallurgical Competition. A HOD will only qualify when his/her entire section qualifies.

 

Metallurgical plants-safety competition participants

  • All Metallurgical and Metallurgical Engineering employees who are employed in Metallurgical Operations at any of the three mines.

 

Qualification criteria

  • Continuous 12 Month periods not having a lost time injury.
  • In order to qualify for Voucher employees must have completed a minimum of 50% of the shifts during the qualifying period.
  • The Section where a Contractor employee is injured will be penalized.

 

Admin / mine stores -safety competition participants

  • All Administrative employees including the Mine stores. A HOD will only qualify when his/her entire section qualifies.

 

Qualification criteria

  • Continuous 12-month period not having a lost time injury.
  • In order to qualify for the voucher, employees must have completed a minimum of 50% of the shifts during the qualifying period
  • The Section where a Contractor employee is injured will be penalised.

 

CRD/carpenter shop – safety competition participants

  • All CRD employees, including the Carpenter shop. A HOD will only qualify when his/her entire section qualifies.

 

Qualification criteria

  • Continuous 12-month period not having a lost time injury.
  • In order to qualify for the voucher, employees must have completed a minimum of 50% of the shifts during the qualifying period.
  • The Section where a Contractor employee is injured will be penalised.

 

Special awards

  • Special awards for outstanding achievements, designs or ideas in the field of safety may be presented to any employee with the approval of the General Manager.
